Pubs and Potatoes, Giants and Geniuses – A story-walk through Irish Bristol @ Bristol City Centre

Saturday 9th March, 14:30

Written and led by Clare Reddaway

‘A story stroll to feed the soul’ (walker, 2023)

Join Clare on a story-walk exploring Irish life in Bristol. Listen to snippets of history and slices of fiction as you see the city with fresh new eyes. Clare will share stories inspired by the streets and buildings at the heart of Bristol and bring to life the forgotten experiences of the Irish people who once lived there.

‘A fascinating and very entertaining mix of history and storytelling. It was brilliant, I loved it. The time flew by.’ (walker, 2023)

There are four slots available for the story-walk:

Saturday March 9th, 2.30pm

Saturday March 16th, 11am

Saturday March 16th, 2.30pm

Sunday March 17th, 3pm

Please select the time and date you prefer at the top of the page!

Clare led this story-walk at the Irish Festival last year. Here are some of the audience responses:

‘We loved everything about it.’

‘Emotive, animated story-telling which really brought the history to life’

‘I liked the combination of historical fact and historical fiction (I was in tears at the first story) – the lovely gentle humour – the way Clare made me imagine that I was seeing the city as it was at the time, when it was only the roads and modern buildings in front of me. I thought I knew Bristol well but I learnt a lot more.’

‘Very powerful stories, and I learnt a lot – thank you for bringing the history alive in such an entertaining and absorbing way.’

The walk lasts approx 1½ hours. Suitable for 12 years and over. The walk begins (and ends) outside the entrance to St Nicholas’ Market on Corn Street, Bristol.

Please be aware that the walk includes a short flight of steep steps.

This is Bristol, it might rain. If the event has to be cancelled due to very bad weather, tickets will be refunded (excluding the Eventbrite fee) or can be transferred to another walk day.

This story-walk is part of the West of England Irish Culture Fest, a programme of events celebrating the Irish diaspora, with dancing, music and sports, culimating in the St Patrick’s Day parade through the centre of Bristol.
